The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) reported the first instance of HPAI in a commercial poultry flock in Manitoba in more than a year.

Information on the CFIA website reveals that the presence of the virus was confirmed in a commercial poultry operation in Portage la Prairie on November 26.

CFIA has not disclosed information concerning the type of birds involved, or the size of the flock.

The last time the CFIA reported an occurrence of HPAI in the province was November 24, 2023, but in that case, it was found in a non-commercial flock in West St. Paul. The last commercial flock infection in Manitoba was confirmed on November 8, 2023, in a commercial poultry farm in Rhineland. That flock, which involved 113,433 birds, was the province’s only commercial poultry flock infection of 2023.

In 2022, Manitoba had 17 commercial poultry flocks affected by HPAI.

Avian flu keeps spreading in British Columbia

CFIA has also confirmed the presence of HPAI in seven commercial poultry flocks in British Columbia since November 27. All seven flocks were in Abbotsford.

Following a three-day period with no new instances of HPAI in British Columbian poultry, CFIA reported the confirmation of a new flock infection on November 27. The next day saw one more flock affected. November 29 and 30 each saw two more flocks affected by the virus. One more flock was struck on December 1.

With these latest cases, British Columbia has now had more than 50 commercial poultry flocks hit by HPAI in 2024.

So far in 2024, the following Canadian provinces have had confirmed cases of HPAI in commercial poultry flocks: British Columbia, Manitoba, Alberta, Quebec, Saskatchewan and Ontario.
