Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was confirmed in commercial poultry flocks in three states on December 27, as well as another state on December 24.
The latest detections of HPAI reported by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) involved turkeys, laying hens and broilers.
1 million Ohio layers lost
APHIS reported that HPAI was confirmed on December 27 in a commercial laying hen flock in Darke County, Ohio. That flock included 1 million hens.
This is the first commercial flock in Ohio to be affected by HPAI in 2024. In 2023, six commercial flocks in the state were affected by HPAI, half of which were in Darke County.
More avian influenza in California
The presence of HPAI was also confirmed on December 27 in a commercial broiler flock in Sacramento County, California. There were 153,800 chickens in that flock.
With this detection, California remains the state hit hardest by the virus this year.
HPAI strikes turkeys in Michigan, Oklahoma
APHIS reported that HPAI was confirmed in one commercial meat turkey flock in Michigan on December 27 and two commercial meat turkey flocks in Oklahoma on December 24.
The Michigan flock – in Ottawa County – involved 113,200 turkeys. Both Oklahoma flocks were in Adair County and involved 45,000 and 85,000 turkeys.
Oklahoma has had three commercial poultry operations struck by HPAI in 2024, according to APHIS, and all three of those have been in Adair County. Michigan has been the site of nine flock infections in 2024, three of which have been in Ottawa County.
