Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been found in a flock of 2,771,300 commercial laying hens in Hyde County, North Carolina.

The presence of the virus was confirmed on January 7, according to information from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).

Until now, North Carolina had not had any commercial poultry flocks affected by HPAI since February 20, 2024, when a commercial meat turkey flock in Duplin County was infected.

Update on Indiana situation

The Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) previously reported that it was responding to a detection of HPAI in Jay County.

APHIS has since announced that the presence of the virus was confirmed in the flock, which involved about 19,900 commercial meat turkeys.

First week of 2025

According to APHIS, during the first seven days of 2025, HPAI’s presence was confirmed in commercial operations in five U.S. states.

California has had three flocks affected, Michigan has had two, while Indiana, North Carolina and Delaware have each had one.

The North Carolina flock involved by far the most birds, although the number of birds involved in one of the California cases has not yet been released.

One more Canadian case

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) reported one more instance of HPAI in a commercial poultry flock in Abbotsford, British Columbia. That case was confirmed on January 5. Information about the flock type and size has not yet been disclosed.

So far in 2025, Canada has had four commercial flocks affected by the virus. Three of those have been in Abbotsford.
