The latest confirmed detections of highly pathogenic avian influenza in commercial poultry include a broiler flock in Delaware and an egg laying flock in Ohio.
Avian influenza in Ohio
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) reported that the presence of HPAI was confirmed in a commercial layer flock in Darke County, Ohio, on January 8. 245,300 hens were affected.
This is the first HPAI incident of 2025 for Ohio, but the last time the virus was confirmed in the state was December 27, 2024, also in a Darke County layer flock. That was the only commercial flock to be struck by HPAI in 2024. The state had six flocks infected in 2023 and one in 2022, according to information from APHIS.
Avian influenza in Delaware
APHIS reported that HPAI was confirmed on January 9 in a commercial broiler flock in Kent County, Delaware, involving 194,800 chickens.
This is the second flock to be affected by HPAI in 2025. The first was also a broiler flock in Kent County. The only other instance of HPAI in commercial poultry in Delaware during the 2022-25 outbreak was another Kent County broiler flock, with that case being confirmed on March 17, 2022.
So far in 2025, the following states have had commercial poultry flocks struck by HPAI: Delaware, Ohio, Indiana, North Carolina, Michigan and California.
