HPAI confirmed in 16 US poultry flocks in 2 days

On January 23-24, Ohio alone had 10 commercial flocks struck by avian influenza.

The presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was confirmed in 16 commercial poultry flocks in the United States over a two-day period.

Of those, 10 were in Ohio, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). The other states with affected flocks include Arkansas, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri and Washington.

The cases confirmed on January 24 include:

  • A flock of 19,500 commercial broiler breeders in Cleveland County, Arkansas
  • A flock of 26,100 commercial egg laying hens in Allen County, Indiana
  • A flock of 300,600 commercial meat turkeys in Wadena County, Minnesota
  • A flock of 650 primary broiler breeders at a pedigree farm in McDonald County, Missouri
  • A flock of 1,149,400 commercial egg laying hens in Newton County, Missouri
  • A flock of commercial egg laying hens in Darke County, Ohio. Flock size information has not yet been released.
  • A flock of 22,300 commercial meat turkeys in Darke County, Ohio
  • A flock of 9,500 commercial meat turkeys in Mercer County, Ohio
  • A flock of 19,600 commercial meat turkeys in Mercer County, Ohio
  • A flock of 18,500 commercial meat turkeys in Mercer County, Ohio
  • A flock of 5,100 commercial meat turkeys in Mercer County, Ohio
  • A flock of 307,800 commercial egg laying hens in Franklin County, Washington

The cases confirmed on January 23 include:

  • A flock of 349,200 commercial table egg pullets in Darke County, Ohio
  • A flock of 1,468,900 commercial egg laying hens in Mercer County, Ohio
  • A flock of 11,200 commercial meat turkeys in Mercer County, Ohio
  • A flock of 85,000 commercial table egg laying hens in Mercer County, Ohio.

So far in 2025, Ohio has had 20 commercial flocks affected by HPAI, Missouri has had eight, Indiana has had four, Minnesota and Arkansas have each had two and Washington has had one.

Other states with commercial flocks affected by HPAI so far this year include Delaware, New York, Michigan, California, Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia.
