Popeyes expands into Chinese market

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Inc. will be making its way to customers in China.

The New Orleans- founded restaurant will be expanding its international footprint to China through an exclusive development rights agreement with Cartesian Capital Group, LLC.

“We are proud to grow the Popeyes brand in China and to bring its famous Chicken Sandwich and iconic products to guests in this exceptionally dynamic market,” said Peter Yu, managing partner of Cartesian in a statement August 10. “We are excited to build on our long-standing and successful relationship with [Restaurant Brands International] RBI, spanning over a decade and most recently including our rapid development of more than 450 Tim Hortons cafes across China.” 

Popeyes has 3,600 restaurants in the U.S. and the rest of the world including South Korea, France, Romania, the U.K., India, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Philippines, Brazil, Switzerland and Sri Lanka. Popeyes is most notable for its fried chicken as well as its fried chicken sandwich which started the chicken sandwich war in 2019.

RBI is one of the world's largest quick service restaurant companies with brands like Tim Hortons, Burger King and Firehouse Subs. 

Cartesian is a global private equity firm that focuses on expanding companies internationally. Other notable brands that have partnered with Cartesian include Circle K and Burger King. Cartesian was founded in 2006 and has committed more than $2.5 billion to more than 70 companies in more than 20 industries, according to its website.
