Additional cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) were confirmed commercial turkey flocks in three South Dakota counties.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) reported recently confirmed cases in:

  • A flock of 25,000 commercial turkeys in Yankton County
  • A flock of 38,678 commercial turkeys in Clark County

HPAI has now been confirmed in commercial turkey flocks located in nine South Dakota counties, Yankton, Clark, Edmunds, McPherson, Faulk, Spink, Beadle, Lake and Charles Mix.

APHIS also announced the presence of previously-presumed HPAI cases; one in a commercial duck flock in Elkhart County, Indiana and four commercial turkey flocks in Minnesota.

In addition, North Carolina reported a presumed HPAI case impacting 89,702 commercial broilers in Wayne County. APHIS has yet to release information on the outbreak.

The Indiana Board of Animal Health (BOAH) reported that the presumed-positive case affected an estimated 4,000 ducks on April 8. This is the first confirmed case of HPAI in a commercial duck flock in 2022 and the third county in Indiana to have a confirmed case of HPAI in commercial poultry.

Two cases were previously confirmed in Greene County and four cases were previously confirmed in Dubois County. All six of those cases involved commercial turkey flocks, and a total of 171,224 turkeys were affected.

On April 11, the Minnesota Board of Animal Health (MBAH) reported four additional cases in commercial turkey flocks, including a flock of 30,000 commercial turkeys in Otter Tail County, a flock of 38,000 commercial turkeys in LaSueur County, a flock of 26,293 commercial turkeys in Stearns County and a flock of 145,000 commercial turkeys in Swift County.

Minnesota has had 22 cases in commercial poultry, with more than 1 million turkeys affected. Minnesota counties where the virus has been confirmed are Kandiyohi, Renville, Swift, Otter Tail, Waseca, Dodge, Meeker, Morrison, Big Stone, Stearns, LeSueur, Becker and Lac Qui Parle.

So far in 2022, HPAI has been confirmed in commercial poultry flocks in the following states: North Dakota, Kentucky, Delaware, Maryland, Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Indiana, North Carolina, Minnesota and Texas. The Texas case involved pheasants.

The virus has also been confirmed in poultry in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Ontario and Nova Scotia.
