Minnesota has confirmed its second case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a commercial poultry operation in 2024.
The Minnesota Board of Animal Health (MBOAH) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) reported that the presence of the virus was confirmed in a commercial breeder operation in Dodge County. Neither agency specified the species of the breeder birds, but the number of birds affected was 8,500.
This is the first case of HPAI in Dodge County since December 2022.
The only other commercial flock in Minnesota to be struck by HPAI was a commercial meat turkey flock in Meeker County on April 11. There were 70,100 birds in that flock.
During the 2022-24 HPAI outbreak, Minnesota has lost 117 commercial poultry flocks to HPAI. Of those, 81 flocks were affected in 2022 and 34 were affected in 2023.
So far in 2024, the following states have had birds in commercial flocks infected with H5N1 HPAI: Minnesota, Michigan, New Mexico, Texas, South Dakota, Missouri, North Carolina, Colorado, Nebraska, Indiana, Wisconsin, Kansas and California.
