Since January 1 there have been a total of 23 companies that have reported recalls for their products.
Recently Pilgrim's has reported its third recall of cooked poultry products since its initial announcement issued on April 7.The first recall involved about 40,780 pounds of cooked chicken products, which were recalled because of concerns of extraneous materials in the products. The company expanded the recall to include an additional 4.5 million pounds of products on April 26. The latest expansion, issued on May 6, Pilgrim’s has now recalled more than 5.1 million pounds of products due to contamination with extraneous materials.
Thirty-six percent of recalls this year have been made due to extraneous materials. Other reasons for recalls have included: misbranding and undeclared allergen, produced without federal inspection, salmonella, listeria monocytogenes, mislabeling, abundance of caution and excessive salt.
Thirty-nine percent of the products recalled have been poultry products which equates to 5,495,366 pounds. This weight includes poultry products that are frozen, cooked and uncooked.
Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.
Consumers who have purchased any products that have been recalled are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on the FSIS website at www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls.
