The presence of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was confirmed a commercial turkey meat bird flock in Newaygo County, Michigan, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) reported.

This case involved 67,200 birds and was confirmed on April 17.

The Newaygo County, Michigan, case was first reported by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) on April 16.

"MDARD continues to thoroughly and robustly respond to the detection of HPAI with an all-hands-on-deck approach with our federal, state, and local partners," said MDARD director, Tim Boring.

"Biosecurity remains the best tool available to combat HPAI, and we continue to encourage producers of all sizes to enhance their biosecurity measures to reduce the risk of introducing this disease to their farm. MDARD is addressing this outbreak from every angle, including working to help mitigate the economic impacts on local communities. We remain laser-focused on our mission to protect animal and public health."

First reported HPAI case in the county

It is the first time HPAI has been reported in Newaygo County since the beginning of the current 2022-23 avian influenza outbreak.

Since the beginning of April, Michigan has confirmed the presence of HPAI in three commercial egg operations and in dairy cattle, both in Ionia County. Prior to these detections, the last time HPAI had been confirmed in a commercial poultry flock in Michigan was December 2023, when two commercial meat turkey flocks in Muskegon County were infected.
