From WATTAgNet:

Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch is working toward obtaining permits for its proposed cage-free layer operation near Mercersburg, Pennsylvania.

The process of getting permits has been a long one, as the egg company announced its planned project more than a year ago. It is in its fourth study for a truck route to service the farm, as the three previous proposed routes were rejected by local officials, Public Opinion reported.

Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch has also applied for a concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) permit and a water quality permit to install two 12,000-gallon fiberglass tanks for storing egg wash water. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection currently is reviewing those applications.

The company has been transparent with its intent to build in the Mercersburg area and sought feedback from the company. In April 2016, Herbruck’s posted what it referred to as a special message on its website. In that message, the egg company offered background on the company, and revealed that it is considering an expansion in the Mercersburg area. However, it assured the readers that the plan was not final and bringing the plans into fruition depended on partnerships with community members.
