New cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) were reported in commercial poultry flocks in three states.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), three commercial poultry operations in California have been affected by HPAI, while South Dakota and Pennsylvania have each had one more positive detection.

California

All three cases were confirmed on December 278 and two were in Sonoma County. One of those was flock of 54,000 commercial egg layers, and the other was a flock of 37,300 commercial egg layers.

California’s other new case involved commercial table egg pullets in Marin County and impacted 151,000 birds.

Sonoma County has now had eight flocks affected by HPAI during the 2022-2023 outbreak. This is the first confirmed HPAI case in Marin County in 2022-2023.

South Dakota

APHIS confirmed the presence of HPAI in a commercial upland bird operation in Edmunds County, South Dakota on December 30. The case involved 1,400 birds and is the 12th confirmed case in Edmunds County since the start of the 2022-2023 outbreak.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania reported a positive HPAI case in a commercial upland game bird operation in Northumberland County on December 27. That flock included 98,300 birds.

While this is the first case confirmed in Northumberland County, it brings Pennsylvania’s case count up to 32.

In 2023, the following states had commercial poultry or commercial upland gamebird flocks struck by HPAI: Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, South Dakota, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Utah, California, Wisconsin, Missouri, Maryland, North Dakota, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Kansas, Oregon, Virginia, Alabama, Illinois and Georgia.
