Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been detected in a commercial poultry facility located in Newaygo County, Michigan.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) did not share the size or type of poultry flock impacted, only that it was in commercial poultry. According to MDARD, this is the first case confirmed in Newaygo County since the beginning of the 2022/2023 HPAI outbreak.

The Newaygo County case has not yet been reported by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).

APHIS confirms cases in Michigan, New Mexico

APHIS did report two new HPAI cases, confirming the presence of HPAI in a commercial table egg layer flock in Ionia, Michigan on April 16 and in a commercial hatchery in Roosevelt, New Mexico on April 15.

The Ionia County HPAI case affected 2,422,700 birds, while the Roosevelt case impacted 15,300 poultry.

Since the beginning of April, Michigan has confirmed the presence of HPAI in two commercial egg operations and in dairy cattle, both in Ionia County. Prior to these detections, the last time HPAI had been confirmed in a commercial poultry flock in Michigan was December 2023, when two commercial meat turkey flocks in Muskegon County were infected.

New Mexico only recently reported its first case of HPAI in commercial poultry flocks. According to information from APHIS, the presence of H5N1 HPAI was confirmed in a commercial hatchery in Roosevelt County. APHIS did not specify what type of hatchery was affected, but it did reveal that 61,500 birds were involved.
