Tesco has extended its commitment to selling cage-free eggs, announcing that by 2025, all of the supermarket chain’s locations in its stores in central Europe will sell only eggs from farms that use cage-free laying systems.
The commitment includes not only its own brand but with other branded eggs as well.
The pledge to sell cage-free eggs in Central Europe is an extension of its earlier promise to phase out eggs from caged hens in its U.K. stores. Tesco’s latest pledge involves an estimated 3,500 stores in Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia.
“Our decision on caged hens is in line with the Tesco approach to ensuring sustainable sourcing and improving animal welfare. We will be working in partnership with our suppliers to move to 100 percent cage-free eggs,” Tesco Central Europe product director said in a press release.
Tesco already offers a wide range of different types of eggs for customers to choose from, including barn, free-range and organic eggs. During the transition to 100 percent cage-free eggs, Tesco and its suppliers will continue to meet the strong existing standards and welfare specifications for egg production, the company stated in the release.
