Egg, poultry sustainability reporting framework announced

A first-ever, multi-stakeholder reporting framework will help the chicken, turkey and egg industries provide transparent communication about sustainability throughout the supply chain.

A first-ever, multi-stakeholder reporting framework from the U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Poultry & Eggs (US-RSPE) will help the chicken, turkey and egg industries provide transparent communication about sustainability throughout the supply chain.

“We’re multi-stakeholder, so that means from the beginning to the end. We have companies represented that produce, as well as supply those farms that are producing, processors, retail and foodservice companies and some trade associations as well,” Ryan Bennett, executive director of US-RSPE, said during the 2021 Virtual Egg Industries Forum.

The program measures sustainability performance across 13 priority areas, with an emphasis on people, planet and poultry. These areas were identified as crucial for building trust with consumers of U.S. chicken, turkey and eggs.

“The framework will increase trust, reduce risk and grow demand for U.S. poultry and eggs,” Bennett explained. “We’ll do that by providing the transparency people are looking for.”

Pilot programs are underway

The priority areas are currently being tested during a series of three pilot programs. Several companies in the poultry industry, as well as consumer facing retailers and restaurants, provided input, including Butterball, Cal-Maine Foods, Cargill, Darling Ingredients, Herbuck’s Poultry Ranch, Iowa Turkey Federation, Kreher’s Family Farms, McDonald’s Corporation, Peco Foods, Sanderson Farms, Tyson Foods, JBS USA, Pilgrim’s and West Liberty Foods.

“We know our customers are increasingly interested in knowing more about their food and where it comes from, which in turn guides our company’s broader commitments on food quality and sourcing,” Ernie Meier, director of quality for McDonald’s Corporation, said in a statement

US-RSPE anticipates launching the framework industry-wide in 2022.

Meier will share more information about the U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Poultry & Eggs at the 2021 edition of Chicken Marketing Summit. During the presentation, he will discuss the sustainability opportunities and challenges facing the poultry supply chain and ways that the Roundtable is working together to continuously improve the three focal points of sustainability; environmental, social and economic.

The 2021 Chicken Marketing Summit will be held at the Omni Amelia Island Resort in Fernandina Beach, Florida on July 18-20. This year, the conference will shine a light on what consumers will be looking for in the post-pandemic world and how poultry marketers can find success in the marketplace. Registration is now open with early savings available.
