Greg MathisDr. Greg Mathis, president, and owner of Southern Poultry Research, Inc.

Dr. Mathis hails from Gainesville, Georgia, often recognized as the Poultry Capitol of the World. After receiving his bachelor’s degree at North Georgia College, worked for USDA and later enrolled at the University of Georgia, where he earned his master’s degree and PhD in poultry science His doctoral work centered on control of coccidiosis, specializing in epidemiology, anticoccidial drugs and genetics. After receiving his PhD, he started Southern Poultry Research, Inc., a private contract poultry research company.  He was awarded the 2018 US Poultry and Egg Distinguished Poultry Career award, the 2018 National Chicken Council Research award, and the American Poultry Historical Society Award. 

 

Jon SchaefferDr. Jon Schaeffer, senior director of technical services, US Poultry at Zoetis

Dr. Schaeffer received his DVM from Auburn University and a PhD in Toxicology from North Carolina State University.  During his 34-year professional career in the animal health industry, he has held positions in clinical research, product development, regulatory affairs and veterinary technical services.  His primary area of interest is coccidiosis control in commercial poultry.  He is currently Senior Director of Zoetis’ US poultry technical services, leading a team of veterinarians and PhDs that supports a broad portfolio of vaccines, medicated feed additives and biodevices for the broiler, layer and turkey industries.

 

John SmithDr. John Smith, president of Alectryon LLC

Dr. Smith spent most of his distinguished poultry career with Fieldale Farms, Baldwin Georgia, serving as director of health services from 1991 through 2015. He then formed Alectryon LLC, a poultry health consultancy. Throughout his career, Dr. Smith has served on numerous poultry industry committees and was elected president of the American Association of Avian Pathologists (AAAP) for 2017-18. Dr. Smith has also been a frequent contributor to continuing-education programs, making more than 90 presentations at AAAP, US Poultry & Egg Association and the American College of Poultry Veterinarians.  In recognition of his many contributions to the poultry industry and avian medicine, AAAP inducted Dr. Smith into its Hall of Honor in 2017.
