One outside contractor was killed and two others were injured after they fell through a ceiling where they were working at the Pilgrim’s Pride plant in Waco, Texas.
The accident took place during the morning of January 26.
According to Pilgrim’s Pride spokeswoman Nikki Richardson, Pilgrim’s team members immediately took action upon learning of the accident, contacting first responders and local authorities, who quickly arrived on the scene. According to a report from KCEN TV, the report was made around 7:25 a.m. The one worker was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other two were transported to the Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Hillcrest campus.
Richardson said that no Pilgrim’s Pride employees were involved in the accident.
The company is conducting an internal investigation to understand what may have caused the accident, she said.
“We thank the police, fire department and other first responders for their quick action and support,” Richardson said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with those injured and the families of all who were involved.”
Pilgrim’s Pride, according to the WATTPoultry.com Top Companies Database, is the second largest poultry producer in the United States. The company produced 160.94 million pounds of ready-to-cook chicken on a weekly basis in 2019, an increase of 4.92 million pounds — almost 3.2% — from 2018.
Pilgrim’s Pride, a publicly traded company, is headquartered in Greeley, Colorado.
