Tom Hayes, former CEO of Tyson Foods and current Ocean Spray CEO, has been appointed to the Maple Leaf Foods Board of Directors.

“We are very pleased to welcome Tom to Maple Leaf Foods’ board,” said Geoff Beattie, board chairman.  "His deep experience as a recognized innovator in the food industry will make him a valuable addition to our Board."

"As Maple Leaf Foods continues its journey to becoming the most sustainable protein company on earth, we are extremely proud to have Tom join us as our newest Director," added Michael McCain, president and CEO of Maple Leaf Foods.  "Tom's vision and passion for sustainability, together with his exemplary track record of leadership and building value, make him a perfect fit for our board."

Hayes became CEO of Ocean Spray in July 2020.

Prior to that, he held top leadership roles at Tyson Foods.

Hayes came to Tyson Foods in 2014 with the company’s acquisition of Hillshire Brands. He was Hillshire’s chief supply chain officer at the time of the acquisition, and moved into the role of president of food service with Tyson Foods.

In June 2016, Hayes was named president of Tyson Foods, and at the conclusion of 2016, he added CEO to his leadership roles. Hayes succeeded Donnie Smith, who retired, in both roles. Hayes served in that capacity until September 30, 2017. He cited “personal reasons,” for resigning. Tyson Foods, in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), revealed that the company offered Hayes a severance package valued at approximately $6.35 million.

Hayes also has experience as a leader with Conagra, US Foods and Kraft Foods.

With Hayes’ appointment to the Maple Leaf Foods board, the size of the board has increased to include 10 directors, eight of which are independent directors.

Maple Leaf Foods is a diverse Canadian protein company, with operations in the broiler, turkey, pork and plant-based protein sectors.
