Pine Creek Farms Manitoba Ltd.has been fined CA$60,000 (US$45,879) after pleading guilty to one count of violating the country’s Meat Inspection Act in which chickens and turkeys were illegally transported from one province to another.
The company in March entered a guilty plea to one count of contravening subsection 10(2)(a) of the Meat Inspection Act., and on May 30, a joint recommended sentence was accepted.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency's (CFIA's) investigation determined that between May 10, 2007, and October 6, 2011, Pine Creek Farms Manitoba Ltd. sold turkeys and chickens and illegally transported them between Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
Subsection 10(2)(a) of the Meat Inspection Act indicates that no person shall advertise or sell, or have in their possession meat products that do not comply with prescribed standards and that have been conveyed from one province to another.
Pine Creek Farms Manitoba Ltd. is not a federally registered facility and, as such, under the Meat Inspection Act and Regulations, cannot legally transport chickens and turkeys from one province to another.
