Tyson Foods, Inc., has made a 50,000-pound donation of protein to the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank in honor of the company’s inaugural Miles that Matter initiative.

Beginning in June, more than 500 Tyson Foods Team Members participated in the program by walking, running or cycling on the Razorback Greenway. For every mile completed, Tyson pledged to donate one pound of protein to the food bank. Team members finished the summer with more than 12,000 total miles.

“This was the first year for Miles that Matter, and while we were extremely happy with the response and participation from our team members, we fell short of our mileage goal,” said Annetta Tirey, senior manager of corporate social responsibility for Tyson Foods. “But because of the ongoing need for protein by the agencies the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank serves, we wanted to do our part and provide this significant donation to the food bank.”

Caring for communities is a big part of how Tyson Foods gives back, and Miles that Matter is a unique program that allows team members to have a personal stake and direct impact on the company’s charitable giving efforts.

“This was a great opportunity to support our community,” said Seth Summerside, a category marketing manager for Tyson Foods. “A lot of times it’s hard to understand that 1 out of 5 families in northwest Arkansas struggle with food insecurity. This program gave us all a platform to stand up for an issue that impacts our friends and our neighbors by making our community better for all.”
