The top export markets for U.S. turkeys during the first six months of 2017 were identified in the U.S. Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service (ARS) Livestock and Meat International Trade Data report, released on August 7.
The report showed that Mexico, which is also the biggest importer of broilers from the United States, was by far the largest export destination for U.S. turkeys from January through June, with 180.5 million pounds of turkey being shipped to Mexico during that time frame.
In fact, during each of those six months, Mexico received about double the amount of turkey that the No. 2 export destination, Hong Kong, received during the entire six-month period.
The top ten destinations of U.S. turkey during the first six months of 2017, and the quantities shipped in pounds, can be seen in the infographic below.
Other markets to receive more than 2 million pounds of U.S. turkey during the past six months, but not landing among the top 10 were Bahamas, Taiwan, Panama, United Arab Emirates, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Peru.
The report also revealed the top countries to export turkey to the United States, although that list was brief. Canada, which was the sixth largest importer of U.S. turkey, was the largest exporter of turkey to the U.S., having shipped 10.5 million pounds during the first six months of 2017.
Chile, which was the tenth largest importer of U.S. turkey, was ranked second among markets to export turkey to the United States with 4.3 million pounds, while the only other country listed to have exported turkey to the U.S. was Israel, which shipped 673,000 pounds during the first six months of 2017.
The Livestock and Meat International Trade Data report is issued on a monthly basis. The next report is scheduled to be released on September 9.
