2 Sisters Food Group will close its chicken processing plant in Cambuslang, Scotland, with an expected closure date scheduled for August.
About 450 people were employed at the poultry plant, and those workers were notified of the closure plans on April 12.
According to The Evening Times, the company stated closing the plant is not a decision it takes lightly, as it had invested heavily in the facility since 2014. However, the investments that were made did not lead to meaningful profitability.
“We have tried every turnaround option available to us for several years, ranging from cost reduction measures and an attempt to grow the business organically. It has made little difference,” the company stated.
The decision to close the Cambuslang poultry plant didn’t come as a complete surprise, because in February, 2 Sisters Food Group had announced that it was considering the closure of that plant, as well as the poultry plants in Smethwick and Wolverhampton, both in England.
At the same time 2 Sisters revealed that it was considering shutting down those three facilities, it revealed that it was planning to create jobs at five other poultry processing sites. Those five included Willand, West Bromwich and Scunthorpe, all in England; Coupar in Scotland and Llangefni in Wales.
About 1,000 jobs were to be created at those five poultry plants, while it was estimated that the closure of the Cambuslang, Smethwick and Wolverhampton plants would mean 900 jobs would be lost.
2 Sisters Food Group, according to the WATTAgNet Top Poultry Companies Database, supplies about one third of all poultry products consumed in the United Kingdom and is one of the ten largest privately held companies in the U.K. The company is involved in both the processing of chicken and turkey. 2 Sisters Food Group is a subsidiary of Boparan Holdings.
