A poultry barn in Moore County, North Carolina, caught fire on the evening of November 28.
The fire, which was believed to have been electrical in nature, killed an estimated 19,000 chickens, according to a report from WTVD.
The poultry farm, Watts Auman Farm, was a contract grower for Perdue Farms, the fourth largest poultry company in the United States.
The fire was reported around 9:30 p.m. When firefighters arrived on the scene, the discovered one of two chicken houses on fire. The fire was contained to just one barn.
A spokesperson for Perdue Farms told the station that the surviving chickens were being examined to assure that they were not injured or affected by smoke inhalation.
A report from Spectrum Local News stated that it took firefighters from multiple units about 40 minutes to bring the fire under control.
