Tyson Foods would like to expand its Tyson Prepared Foods plant in Hutchinson, Kansas.

The company has applied for permits with the City of Hutchinson, as it seeks to add about 7,000 square feet of freezer space to the plant, located at 521 South Main, according to an email from Tyson Foods spokesman Worth Sparkman.

According to Sparkman, the expansion plans are being made “as part of our efforts to continually invest in our operations. Presently, about 160 people are employed at the plant, and Tyson Foods does not expect the number of employees at the facility to change. However, he said the proposed expansion would “ensure the location is well-positioned to continue serving our customers.”

According to a report from the Hutchinson News, the plans are currently being reviewed by city staff and a sign has been posted to notify its neighbors of the proposed plans.

The Main Street location is one of two facilities Tyson Foods operates in the vicinity. It has a larger facility in the adjoining city, South Hutchinson. The South Hutchinson plant is the larger of the two, employing about 440 people.

Both the Hutchinson and South Hutchinson plants were part of Tyson Foods’ 2001 acquisition of Iowa Beef Packers (IBP).

Tyson Prepared Foods operates several locations in Kansas, including one in Holcomb, which was badly damaged by a fire on August 9. The damaged portions of the building are being rebuilt, and the company anticipates that the Holcomb facility will be back to full operations this month.

Tyson Foods, according to the WATTAgNet Top Poultry Companies Database, is the largest broiler company in the United States and the fifth largest turkey company. It is also a leading producer of beef and pork, and recently entered the plant-based protein sector.

Tyson Foods’ headquarters are located in Springdale, Arkansas.
