From WATTAgNet:

A proposed expansion at a House of Raeford Farms poultry plant in West Columbia, South Carolina, has been sidelined after the West Columbia Zoning Board of Appeals denied a variance submitted by the company.

House of Raeford Farms had wanted to build a new room at the plant because it needed more electricity.

However, there were city residents who were opposed to the project, complaining about the smells and appearance of the building, despite efforts on behalf of the company to improve both.

Company spokesman Dave Witter issued the following statement to WISTV: “While disappointed in last night’s decision by the board, we remain optimistic that a solution can be found to address what are basic needs for our operations.”

House of Raeford Farms, according to the WATTAgNet Top Poultry Companies Database, is the eighth largest broiler company in the United States. The company suffered a setback earlier in 2017, when its poultry plant in Teachey, North Carolina, was destroyed by a fire. Plans are in the works to rebuild the plant, and other companies including Sanderson Farms and Mountaire Farms have worked out arrangements to process some birds for House of Raeford.
