From WATTAgNet:
A representative from Lincoln Premium Poultry met with the Madison County Commission in Nebraska to advise county officials that three farmers from there had submitted grower applications for the plant that the company will operate to process chicken for sale in Costco stores.
Jessica Kolterman, community relations manager for Lincoln Premium Poultry, told commissioners at their September 19 meeting about the applications, stating that the company wants “to have a lot of transparency.”
The poultry plant, under construction in Fremont, Nebraska, is expected to be in operation in April 2019. The time it takes to drive from Madison, the county seat of Madison County, to Fremont is about one hour and 15 minutes.
If the poultry farms are approved, growers would be contractually obligated to have at least four poultry houses. The terms of the contract call for the farmers to grow chickens for Lincoln Premium Poultry for 15 years.
Potential poultry farms in Madison County would be subject to approval from the county’s planning and zoning commission, as well as the county board.
Officials from Costco Wholesale Corporation and Lincoln Premium Poultry joined local and state dignitaries in June to break ground on the new plant. The processing equipment for the plant has been ordered from Marel Poultry.
When the poultry plant is completed, it will have the capacity to process about a third of the raw and rotisserie chicken products sold at Costco stores across the United States.
In addition to the poultry plant, which is expected to process about 2 million chickens per week, the project will include a hatchery and feed mill facility.
