A commercial upland gamebird producer in Anderson County, Kansas, is the first of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) to be confirmed in a commercial operation in the United States of 2023.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) the case was confirmed on January 4, and 8,900 birds were involved. Anderson County is in the east-central portion of the state.

This marks the first case of HPAI to be confirmed in a commercial operation in Kansas in 2023 and the second in the state for the 2022-23 outbreak. The previous case was confirmed in McPherson County on April 13, 2022, and involved a flock of 6,900 commercial turkey breeder hens.

The presence of HPAI, according to APHIS, was also confirmed in two non-poultry flocks on January 4, with one of those occurring in neighboring Missouri and the other in Oregon.

Other states to have confirmed HPAI cases in upland gamebird operations during the present outbreak include California, Colorado, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Nebraska, Idaho, Texas and New York.
