New Hampshire, one of seven states in which cage-free legislation had been proposed, has defeated two measures. One House bill would have banned caged egg production, while another would have required the state to only purchase cage-free eggs.
“This is an important victory for egg producers across the country,” says the United Egg Producers.
The Humane Society of the United States has promised to introduce cage-free legislation in every state.
The other six states where legislation to ban caged production has been considered are Connecticut, Washington, Arizona, Vermont, California, and Delaware.
“Right now, it appears we are winning,” says Gene Gregory, UEP president and CEO. In Connecticut, a committee voted it down for this session, and in Washington, the measure will not be taken up this year, he says. It’s undetermined how bills will fare in other states.
