When students swap their textbooks for whisks and aprons, they’re learning valuable life skills through Family and Consumer Science courses. The American Egg Board, home of The Incredible Egg, is introducing a new Cook & Learn instructional video series designed as a FREE resource specifically for classrooms in grades six through 12. The videos star Chef Robert Rusan of the Maplewood Richmond Heights School District (Maplewood, Mo).

The Cook & Learn video series is designed to engage and educate students on the nutritional benefits of eggs and different ways eggs can function in the kitchen. The videos progress from basic to advanced cooking, to inspire students to create enjoyable, nutritious and tasty food for themselves and their families. The videos can act as a kickstarter to supplement further instruction and practical classroom application.

From beginner to advanced, scrambled to soufflé

The series launch offers 11 videos designed specifically for use with middle and high school students enrolled in Family and Consumer Science courses. The videos include basic instructions for cooking perfect hard-boiled, fried, poached and scrambled eggs, and progress to instructions for making a tasty ham, cheese and spinach omelet. Advanced cooking videos demonstrate the proper technique for creating an angel food cake, baked custard, Hollandaise sauce, mayonnaise, meringue and soufflé.

“Chef Robert’s teaching style, background and his deep and abiding commitment to his community’s food security made him the perfect choice for our new video program,” said Anne L. Alonzo, AEB President & CEO. “We believe students can gain a sense of pride and accomplishment when they master cooking skills. The movement from basic to advanced can help students gradually build a repertoire of tasty, healthy dishes to feed themselves and their families.”

A complete list and links to the 11 videos included in the initial program kickoff is available at AEB.org/CookingVideos. There is no cost and Family and Consumer educators can enjoy FREE access to the video series.
