Poultry carcasses mar Korean groundwater

Water may contain leachate

The Korean government is setting up tap water pipelines near 343 villages where the water supply is potentially contaminated by leachate, according to reports.

Leachate is a liquid from landfills with poultry carcasses, many of which were slaughtered during the avian influenza outbreak in 2003.

Eight out of 15 agricultural areas tested were reportedly contaminated. Tests also show high amounts of colon bacillus and other contaminants.
