Plukon Food Group has reached an agreement in principle to acquire 100% of the slaughtering and processing activities of Polish poultry producer Algas SP.

Algas, under the leadership of the Szatan family, is a second-generation family business based near the southern Polish city of Katowice with a slaughterhouse and a processing plant. The company initiated its poultry processing activities in 1997 and established itself as a prominent local player in southern Poland’s broiler slaughtering and poultry processing sector. The 2023 turnover of Algas amounted to approximate EUR35 million (US$38 million).

The planned acquisition of Algas represents an important moment for both Plukon and the Szatan family to invest in further growth in activities in Poland. Integrating Algas within Plukon Food Group will create new opportunities and can increase its capacity to supply Plukon’s retail and foodservice customers with high-quality fresh and frozen poultry products in Poland and to other European markets. Plukon, headquartered in the Netherlands, is presently the fourth largest poultry company in Europe and the 19th largest in the world.

The Szatan family will continue to be involved in the business operations of the slaughterhouse and a processing plant. Additionally, the Szatan family-owned broiler farms will continue to deliver broilers to the Algas slaughterhouse.

Kees Kraijenoord, Plukon CEO said: “This strategic acquisition of Algas strengthens our position in Poland and underlines our commitment to growth and leadership in the European poultry market. We are delighted to welcome Algas and the Szatan family within our group and to realize synergies arising from our combined assets and capabilities.”

Szczepan Szatan, spokesperson for the Szatan family and board member of Algas, said: “This partnership with Plukon represents a transformative chapter for our family business. We are excited about the opportunities of leveraging Plukon’s resources and expertise to accelerate our growth path. The Szatan family remains deeply committed to the continued success of the company and looks forward to a fruitful collaboration with Plukon.”

Completion of the transaction is subject to the usual conditions, such as approval by the relevant competition authorities.
