Integrators and processors - May 2008

May updates on several integrators and processors

Reuters reports that Charoen Pokphand Foods of Thailand will invest US$202 million in constructing a pig production site and feedmill in the Moscow region of Russia. A list of investments planned around Moscow suggests that official permission for the project was obtained in October 2007. According to the integrator's annual report for 2007, the facilities will have a combined capacity of 240 000 tons/year. The first phase is scheduled to be launched in the third quarter of 2008.

Canadian processor Maple Leaf Foods is reported to be selling its 2 million pigs/year slaughter plant in Ontario, as part of the group strategy of changing to value-added meat operations and developing its further-processing site in Manitoba.
