Temple Grandin: Some slow growth may help broiler industry

The animal welfare and livestock care expert said a return to 1950s genetics is impractical, but some slower growing genetics may help avoid woody breast and other problems.

Slowing down broiler growth rates somewhat may be appropriate, according to one of the country’s foremost welfare experts.

“I don’t think it’s as simple as saying, ‘We’re going to go back to 1950s style chicken.’ I think that’s just stupid,” Dr. Temple Grandin, a professor at Colorado State University’s Department
