A worker at the Fieldale Farms poultry plant in Murrayville, Georgia, died after he fell from a ladder at the facility.

The accident occurred around 3 a.m. on January 15. The worker has been identified as Chit Tuay, 38. Tuay is a resident of Stone Mountain, Georgia. He had been employed by Fieldale Farms for about 5 years and was a part of the sanitation team at the plant, Fieldale Farms President Tom Hensley, a former chairman of the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association, told the Gainesville Times.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Department responded to the call when the accident was reported. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the incident. An autopsy is being conducted.

Fieldale Farms, according to the WATTAgNet Top Poultry Companies Database, processed 16 million pounds of ready-to-cook chicken on a weekly basis in 2018, making it the 14th largest broiler company in the United States. Fieldale Farms has about 4,700 employees.

Fieldale Farms in late 2017 announced plans to expand its facility in Murrayville. Several months later, those expansion plans were approved by the Hall County Board of Commissioners. According to an earlier report from the Gainesville Times, the plant would nearly double in size, growing by about 200,000 square feed and the addition of 40,000 square feet in support buildings.

The Murrayville plant has been part of Fieldale Farms’ operations since 1964. Fieldale Farms is headquartered in Baldwin, Georgia.
