Canada’s most recent case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was confirmed in Middlesex Centre, Ontario.

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), the case was confirmed on April 5.

CFIA did not elaborate on what type of poultry flock was affected or how many birds were involved.

Just one day prior to this, CFIA reported that another commercial poultry flock in Rouville, Quebec, had been affected by HPAI, and two cases in Rouville were confirmed on April 3.

The latest case is the second HPAI occurrence in commercial poultry in Middlesex Centre during the 2022-23 outbreak. The previous case was confirmed on November 29, 2022. Ontario’s previous most recent case in a commercial poultry operation was confirmed on March 14 in West Lincoln Township. However, CFIA and the National Centre for Foreign Animal Disease (NCFAD), a dog in Oshawa, Ontario, tested positive for HPAI on April 1, which to date is the only case of its kind in the country.

Ontario has now had 31 confirmed cases of HPAI during the 2022-23 outbreak. The virus was first confirmed in the province on March 27, 2022, in the Township of Guelph/Eramosa.
