Major slaughterhouse closes in southeastern Australia

Producers must send pigs further for processing

Closure of a pig slaughterhouse in the town of Young, New South Wales, Australia, has left pork producers without a nearby place to have their hogs processed for export.

Burrangong Meat Processors was the region’s only swine facility licensed for export processing, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. One farmer told reporters that Burrangong was just 30 kilometers from his operation, but now he has to send his swine 450 kilometers away if he wants them prepared for export.

Burrangong Meat Processors went into receivership on February 2.
