Canada’s environmental agency has ruled that genetically modified Yorkshire pigs are not harmful to the environment, opening the possibility that meat from the pigs could eventually be sold to Canadian consumers, The Vancouver Sun reported.

The pigs’ feces has 30% to 65% less phosphorus than that of standard pigs, which could help reduce phosphorous pollution in waterways, according to the newspaper.

The University of Guelph, which developed the pigs, is also seeking regulatory approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Within Canada, its next step is to gain approval for commercial production from Health Canada.
