Members of Chilean poultry and pork producer organizations will be travelling to Russia in September to discuss increasing Chilean meat and poultry products to Russia. The Embassy of Chile has asked Rosselkhoznadzor, the Russian federal service for veterinary and phytosanitary surveillance, for assistance for members of the associations who will arrive in Russia for the trade mission.

Chilean pork and poultry producers during the mission would also like to visit laboratories in Moscow and St. Petersburg to gain a better understanding of food safety requirements prescribed by Russian law, as well as learn more about the product assessment technology deployed in Russia to ensure that the Chilean meat products meet the necessary standards.

The trade mission follows Russia’s ban on imports of food products from the U.S., E.U., Canada, Australia and Norway. Because of the ban, initiated on August 6, Russia is looking toward other import opportunities, including South American countries.

Russia has already made some moves to improve trade relations with Chile. Rosselkhoznadzor on August 15 announced that it has lifted temporary restrictions on products exported from two Chilean fish processing plants. The agency stated that laboratory test results have shown that the Chilean fish products were in compliance with Customs Union standards.
