From WATTAgNet:
Three animal rights activists were arrested during the early morning hours of August 21 for attempting to block a truck hauling live chickens outside of the Petaluma Poultry plant in Petaluma, California.
Three suspects – identified as Rachel Ziegler, Chai Masala Canaglia and Lewis Bernier – were taken to the Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of obstructing traffic and disobeying a police officer. The three were apparently advised by officers to move from the street. Ziegler and Bernier had to be pulled aside, Petaluma Police Lt. Tim Lyons told reporters. The suspects are affiliated with the group Bay Area Animal Save.
The arrests came one week after another activist was arrested for a similar activity outside of the Petaluma Poultry plant. On August 14, Jonathan Frohmayer, who was reported to be affiliated with animal rights group Direct Action Everywhere, was arrested on charges of trespassing. Frohmayer was one of a group of protesters who had trespassed to block a truck from moving in a private driveway.
All protesters in the earlier incident apparently moved, except for Frohmayer.
The recent arrests outside the Petaluma Poultry plant occurred after Zach Groff, representing Animal Liberation Collective, reportedly said at the August 3-6 Animal Rights National Conference that “breaking the law can often be a good thing to do” because “this is a type of activism that can often upset people, it can rile people up.”
According to the Petaluma Poultry website, the company provides locally raised, fresh organic and free-range chicken.
