Tyson Foods has been approved to receive about $95,000 worth of tax abatements from officials in Denton County, Texas, for the construction of a refrigerated warehouse in the county.

The company in December 2018 announced plans to build a $30.6 million, 350,000 square foot facility in West Denton.

During a Denton County Commission meeting on April 16, the five-member commission unanimously approved an agreement, in which the county will give Tyson a 25 percent tax abatement over a six-year period, beginning in 2022, according to a Denton Record-Chronicle report.

Michael Talley, Denton County’s economic development director, estimated that the county will collect about $283,766 over that six-year period.

“It’s a really good investment, which is why you have to look at these requests. We will definitely get a good return on our investment,” said Commissioner Dianne Edmondson.

The facility will be located in the precinct Edmondson represents on the commission.

An estimated 100 full-time employees will work at the Tyson Foods warehouse facility, and those people will earn an average wage of $25 per hour. About 150 workers will be needed during the construction of the facility, according to Tyson Foods’ abatement application.

The Denton City Council in February also approved about $269,000 worth of incentives for the project, with much of those incentives coming in the form of electricity discounts.

Denton is located in the northern portion of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area.

Tyson Foods, according to the WATTAgNet Top Poultry Companies Database, is the largest broiler company in the United States and the second largest poultry company in the world, having grown in 2018 through the acquisition of Tecumseh Poultry and Keystone Foods. It also ranks fifth among turkey companies in the United States and is a major processor of beef and pork products. The company is headquartered in Springdale, Arkansas.
