Rep. Angie Craig, a member of the U.S. House Agriculture Committee, was the victim of an assault on February 8.

“This morning around 7:15 a.m., Rep. Craig was assaulted in the elevator of her apartment building in Washington, D.C. Rep Craig defended herself from the attacker and suffered bruising, but is otherwise physically O.K.,” Nick Coe, Craig’s chief of staff, said in a statement on Craig’s Twitter feed.

There was no evidence that the incident was politically motivated, Coe said.

According to a press release from the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, a suspect, Kendrick Hamlin, also known as Hamlin Khalil Hamlin, was arrested and charged with simple assault.  Hamlin, 26, had no fixed address.

Coe expressed gratitude on Craig’s behalf to the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department for their quick response, and asked that people respect Craig’s privacy following the incident.

Craig, D-Minnesota, was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018 and was recently elected to a third term with 51% of the vote, defeating Republican challenger Tyler Kistner.

In 2020, during her first term, Craig advocated for financial assistance for turkey producers who suffered market disruptions and related costs related to the COVID-19 pandemic through the second Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP 2).

“In our state, many independent turkey growers are responsible for all of their input costs, putting them at a greater financial risk,” Craig said at the time. “We must do everything we can to support them and protect their livelihoods during this uncertain time.”

Within the agriculture committee, Craig serves on the following subcommittees: Commodity Exchanges, Energy and Credit; General Farm Commodities and Risk Management; and Livestock and Foreign Agriculture.

Craig is also a member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, the House Committee on Small Business, and she is the co-chair of the LGBTQ Equality Caucus.
