Canada’s first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) for the month of October has been reported in a commercial poultry flock in Cardston County, Alberta.
According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), the most recent case was confirmed on October 3. CFIA did not disclose the type of poultry in the flock or how many birds were involved.
This is the first case for Cardston County since April 15, 2022.
The latest detection of HPAI follows 5 confirmed instances of HPAI in Canada during September. Of those, three involved commercial poultry flocks. All but one of those was in Alberta, except one commercial flock in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan. The other two commercial flocks affected in September were in Alberta's Warner and Strathcona counties.
So far in 2023, the following provinces have had confirmed HPAI cases in commercial poultry: Alberta, Quebec, British Columbia and Ontario. A total of seven provinces had commercial flocks affected by HPAI in 2022. Those include Alberta, Quebec, British Columbia, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia.
Prior to these five HPAI infections in September, Canada had not had any cases of HPAI in commercial poultry since May 6.
Alberta had 38 premises with commercial poultry affected by HPAI in 2022.
South of the border, the United States has not had any cases of HPAI in commercial poultry since April 19.
