Argentina has declared itself free from highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), and forwarded relevant information to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) for official recognition.

HPAI was first detected in the country in February 2023. Since then, Argentina has reported 18 outbreaks in commercial farms, in addition to those in backyard flocks and wild birds. Now, however, more than 28 days have passed since the last affected commercial farm was depopulated and disinfected.

In addition to self-declaring, Argentina has also been working with its export markets on recognition of its zoning plan, which would allow poultry exports to continue from unaffected areas should the disease re-emerge.

In 2022, 17% of Argentina’s 2.5 million metric tons of poultry meat was exported. Its principal overseas markets were China and South Africa, with the former taking 29% of all poultry meat exports during the year.
