From WATTAgNet:

Wayne Farms’ plans to add a new variable retention freezer system and a 47,000-square-foot refrigerated warehouse to its operations in Dothan, Alabama, got a boost from the Dothan City Commission on September 19, as the city approved a 20-year tax abatement for the poultry company.

Typically, the city does not approve tax abatements that go beyond 10 years, Dothan First reported, but because of the magnitude of this expansion project, commissioners approved a 20-year abatement.

“We just wanted to show them we’re grateful they came to Dothan,” explained Mayor Mike Schmitz, who added that Wayne Farms has invested more than $100 million in the community and employs more than 1,000 people.

Some of Wayne Farms’ recent expansion efforts have been in Dothan. An expansion at the poultry plant in Dothan, which the company announced in 2015, included the addition of 42,000 more square feet to the already existing structure and renovations to other parts of the plant. With the expansion, the facility was able to double its capacity.

Also in Alabama, Wayne Farms, the sixth largest broiler company in the United States, recently completed the construction of a new feed mill in Dale County, and broke ground on an innovation center, to be located in Decatur. The innovation center will become the company’s center of research, development and product testing.
