A fire destroyed a hen house at a Cal-Maine Foods egg production facility in Chase, Kansas, on November 20.

According to a report, six fire departments responded to a fire at a large building on the egg farm around 3 p.m. They worked to contain the blaze for about four hours. Firefighters used a bulldozer to keep the fire from spreading to the other buildings on the property as they also fought high winds.

The building is considered a total loss. No injuries were reported, but the building is reported to have had hens inside at the time of the fire. A Cal-Maine general manager told KWCH that the loss is significant for the facility, but not the company as a whole.

Cal-Maine did not answer a request for comment from WATTAgNet and a cause for the fire is not known.

Cal-Maine Foods, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, is primarily engaged in the production, grading, packing and sale of fresh shell eggs, including conventional, cage-free, organic and nutritionally enhanced eggs.
