Over half of global cage-free commitments are progressing

56% of companies with global cage-free housing pledges have reported progress on their transition.

Approximately 75% of companies with cage-free commitments in animal welfare group Compassion in World Farming’s 2023 EggTrack Report have reported progress on their cage-free transition.

Of the 444 companies included in the report, 195 are from the retailers and meal kit category, 111 are from the restaurant sector, 74 are from food service and hospitality, 51 are manufacturers and 13 are producers. Much of the progress has been made by manufacturers and the least has been made by food service and hospitality.

The 2023 report tracks cage-free deadlines, progress made against pledges and key findings concerning the egg industry’s transition. Of the companies included in the report, 79 operate internationally, 274 operate in Europe and the U.K., 134 operate in the U.S. and 23 operate in the Asia-Pacific region.

Global progress

There are 79 companies listed in the report with 88 global pledges, however, only 56% are currently reporting progress towards their cage-free commitment.

Of the 79 companies that have global commitments, 34 are from the restaurant sector, 21 are manufacturers, 19 are food service and hospitality companies and five are retailers and meal kit providers. According to the report, no egg producers were included at a global level.

Regional progress

The most cage-free transition progress has been reported in Europe, followed by the U.S.

There are 274 companies listed in the report with 440 European commitments. Approximately 75% are reporting on progress towards their pledge. The majority of the 274 companies are from the retailers and meal kit sector, followed by restaurants and food service and hospitality companies.

There are 134 companies with 147 U.S. commitments. About 74% are reporting on progress towards their commitment. Most of the 134 companies are from the restaurant sector, followed by retailers and meal kit providers and food service and hospitality companies.

There are 23 companies with 40 Asia-Pacific pledges. Approximately 60% are reporting on progress towards their pledge. Out of the 23 companies, the majority from food service and hospitality followed by the restaurant sector and retailers and meal kit providers.
