BRF pledges to use only cage-free eggs by 2025

BRF S.A., one of the largest food companies in the world, is pledging after 2025 to use only cage-free eggs in all of its food processing.

BRF S.A., one of the largest food companies in the world, is pledging use only cage-free eggs in all of its food processing by the end of 2025.

Eggs are used primarily in the company’s production of processed foods. According to WATT Global Media's database of top poultry companies, the Itajaí, Brazil, company is estimated to slaughter 1.724 billion birds annually. In addition to poultry products, it sells fresh meat and processed foods – like pasta, sauces, mayonnaise and frozen vegetables – to customers in Brazil, Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia.

“This is another step we are taking to demonstrate our continued effort to obtain advances toward BRF’s public commitment to animal welfare,” Sula Alves, manager of sustainability for BRF, said in a press release.

The project is being undertaken in a partnership between the company and the animal welfare activist group World Animal Protection. Together, the two established a pioneer program among the companies in the sector in Brazil with the objective of perfecting animal care. BRF, with World Animal Protection, are involved with the construction of a wide-ranging plan, based on the transmission of knowledge and the exchange of experiences with the objective of advance animal welfare practices.

“We are continuing committed to developing more methods that lead changes and best practices in the sector,” Sula said.

Throughout the years, BRF has consistently worked to advance this issue and improve the welfare of animals throughout its supply chain, for example, with the 2014 announced of the gradual elimination of gestation crates from its supply chain and pork production by the end of 2026.
