California boosts layer numbers 7 percent

Table egg type layer numbers were 1 percent below year-earlier levels on July 1, compared to no change for June, last month’s USDA Chicken and Eggs report shows.

Eggs per 100 layers on July 1 were 2 percent above 2007 levels, however.

Three of the nation’s top 10 egg-producing states increased table egg layer numbers during June in flocks 30,000 and above, with California posting the largest percentage gain. Iowa and Ohio were both up 3 percent; Indiana, down 2 percent; Pennsylvania, down 1 percent; California, up 7 percent; Texas, down 4 percent; Nebraska, down 14 percent; Minnesota, down 6 percent; Georgia, down 2 percent; and Florida, down 1 percent.
