Layer numbers continue below year-earlier levels

Only two of top 10 egg-producing states show increases.

Layer numbers continue to lag behind 2007 levels, USDA’s November Chicken and Eggs report shows. Total table egg type layers on November 1 were 2% below year-earlier levels, but productivity was up, with eggs per 100 layers showing an increase of 1%.

Looking at the nation’s top 10 egg producing states in flocks 30,000 and above during October, production was up in just two: California, which was up 3%; and Ohio, up 1%. Numbers (on a percentage basis) showed no change in Iowa and Pennsylvania. And production was down 7% in Florida and Nebraska; 5% lower in Indiana; 4% in Minnesota; and down 2% in Texas and Georgia.
