Restaurants in China serving chicken bitten to death by poisonous snakes are being asked to stop the practice by health authorities, according to a news report.
The snake-bitten chicken meat is supposedly considered a detoxing meal and is served by a small number of food service establishments in the southern province of Guangdong and Chongquing city.
However, the practice has generated a controversy as animal rights supporters say the method of killing the chicken is cruel and amoral.
